Abstract The present work was designed to estimate the level of knowledge of a group of mothers in an urban and a rural areas in Alexandria about the vaccines and vaccination of their children during the first two years of age. As well the work was designed to assess the practical role of such mothers in vaccination of their children. A sb,tified random sample was chosen from mothers at~nding MCR centers in Alexandria and the health unit of Abbis 8 village during their antenatal visit. Another random sample was chosen from nurses of the same MCR centers and the health unit of Abbis 8 village. The total sample size of mothers was 510 ( 400 urban sample and 110 rural sample. The total urban sample constitute 200 primipara and 200 multipara equally constituted of educated and non-educated mothers. While all the total rural sample mothers were uneducated and constitute 85 multipara and 25 primipara. Nurses working in the health centers presenting services to these mothers were interviewed to assess their knowledge about vaccines and vaccination. They were all 35 nurses. A questionair sheet including socioecono~ic data and the knowledge and practice of mothers about each vaccine in details such as : objective of each vaccine, its route of administration, its tj_me and side effect.
