Abstract

Field experiments were carried out during two successive seasons of 1993 and 1994, at Sakha Research Station Farm, Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt. They were conducted to compare mechanical transplanting with manual transplanting to show the most economical method under Egyptian conditions using different Japanese transplanters and with rice variety Giza 181. In the growing season of 1993 the land was prepared by using moldboard plow, harrowed by disk harrow, dry leveled and puddled by wooden puddler (wet leveling). In the successive season of 1994 land was prepared by using chisel plow two times, dry leveled and puddled by widen puddler (wet leveling). Two different types of Japanese transplanters were used, namely a) 4-row walking type, and b) 6-row riding type. The effect of planting speed of transplanters on the percentage of defective hills and grain yield was taken into consideration. Also, the effect of slippage ratio of transplanters was studied on the following parameters: a) planting speed, b) missing hills, c) flooting hills, and d) damaged hills percentage. The reciprocal speed of the finger and its effect on the grain yield was indicated.
