Abstract -67— THE SUMMARY This work has been planned and conducted as an analytical case-control study in which 150 persons from the Nile Delta were examined for upper gastro-iutestinal lesions using radiology and/or endoscopy. Of these, 100 cases were proved to have upper gastro-intestinal lesions and 50 were free. All were subjected to history taking, physical examination, urine and stool analy-sis, intradermal test, radiology, endoscopy and complete blood count. The conclusions of the present study are: 1)The liver showed the highest incidence of affection among upper gastrointestinal tract, followed by the small intestine then the stomach, confirming with other studies carried out in and outside Egypt. 2)The importance of chronicity of schistosomiasis to produce manifest upper gastro-intestinal lesion so age means of cases significantly different from controls, also confirming studies carried out previously. 3)Schistosomiasis is more prevalent among index cases than con-trols, which confirm intimate relationship between schistosomi-asis and upper gastro-intestinal lesions. - 68 - 4)In late stage of schistosomiasis urine and stool analysis has no significance but intradermal test give statistically significant difference between cases and controls. 5)Haematemssis is a major complaint indicate a lesion paw ticularly varices which represent half of :the total cases. 6)Vomiting is another main complaint indicate a pathology specially ulcers which represent together ,40% of cases. 7)Abdominal pain is a vague symptom present in all controls without actual lesion, while present only in 36% of oases as accompanying complaint. 8)The importance of schistosomal treatment to reduce in-cidence of upper gastrointestinal lesions, 70% of controls treated while 13% only of the cases, the difference is statis-tically significant. 9)Anaemia is a major sign of upper gastro-intestinal lesions due to associated bleeding, lose of appetite, toxins, malnu-trition and endocrine imbalance. 7 |
