Abstract
This work Included a comparative study of plasma
concentrations of antithrombin Ill, the main physiological
InhibItor of blood ccagulation, in both normal pregnant
(study group) and normal non-pregnant women Icontrol
Qroup). We aimed at fihdlng if there 15 any major
alterations in AT III values during normal pregnancy.
C~ses selected In this stud~ were known to have
neither previous or current disease, familial or
acquired, that May affect the AT III 1~ve15, ncr any
drug intake that gay alter the haernostatia m~ohani~m.
Our normal pre9nant cases ¢onslste~ or 3) normal healthy
primigrAvidae In their late weeks of gestation (36th -
40th weeks) where any doubtful cases wit~ antepartum
haemcrrhag~, toxaemlas or ~~egn~nc) (pregnancy-induced
hypertensIon) and 91u~osurla were eKcluded. The normal
control group consisted of 34 non-p~e~nant nuliipArA of
the same age group. Radial immunodirrU51o~ te~hnique
(R.l.O.1 ~as u~ed In this study for AT III a~say.
Mean obtained values for t~@ ~T III 1n the
plasma of our Cdses were 25.6~7.6 mg/dl 1n the pregnant
women a~d J~.2±IJ.2 mg!dl i~ the non-pregnant wcmen.
This denotes G highly significant decrease in th~

levels of AT III d~ring normal pregnancy (P < 0.001),
On ¢onp~r1ng t~e gestatlonalcage and m~an AT III
values, .e faund no dlre~t correlatlun (P> 0.05). Also,
no correlation ~a$ observed between mean AT III values
a~d the age and the weight uf ovt pregn~nt a~cl nonpregnant
women (P > 0.05), HQwe~er, there ~as an
apparent negatiye a550clation between AT III levels
a~d the ~eight of both pre~n~nt and ~o~-preg~a~t women,
i.e., a border-lln~ fieg~tlve correlation lr = -0.31,
r = -0.22, respectively).
