Abstract

Assessment of phagocytic function of PMN leucocytes
by Wilkinson Technique (1977) was performed on 15
asthmatic children (8 males & 7 females) aged 3 to 11
years and on 15 normal children (8 males & 7 females) of
the same age group, in order to elucidate. The
pathogenesis of their increased predisposition to upper
respiratory tract infections.
For all cases the following were done:
- Full history taking
- Clinical examination
- X-ray film
- Special tests
a- complete blood picture
b- Phagocytosis (Wilkinson, 1977).
The patients were divided into two groups:
Group (I) Consisted of 15 patients (8 males and 7
females), In whome asthmatic attacks are well
established.
group (II): ”Control group” consisted of 15 apparently
healthy subjects (8 males and 7 females).

The elevated total leucocytic count and absolute
P.M.N count in group I than those of group II denoting
the role of infection as a precipitating factor.

Also, a high significant reduction In phagocytic
index by uSIng either pooled or patient serum In
asthmatic patients than control group.
In conclusion, our results denote that atopic
asthmatic children have defect in phagocytic function of
P.M.N such situation makes those patients more prone to
respiratory infection.
