Abstract

Pots and field experiments were carried out at the fm Kafi El-Sheikh, Faculty of Agriculture during the sununer seasons of 1992 and 1993. The main objective of this study was to recognize the responses of eggplant (Solunti~nm elogenn L.) ”Rorni and Baladi black varieties” to foliar applications of several concentrations of growth regulating substances ” chlormequat chloride (cycocel), morphactin and mepiquat chloride (Pix.). The used levels for chlonnequat chloride were 750, 1000 and 1500 ppm, morphactin were 1.5 and 10 ppm and mepiquat chloridz wcre 500,750 and 1000 ppm beside the control (water spray). , A split-plot design with three replicates was used. Varieties wcre allotted to the main plots while the levels of chlormequat chloride, morphactin and mepiquat chloride were tried at the sub plots. The area of the sub-plot was 10.5 m2. Data were tested by analysis of variance Duncan’s multiple range test was used for comparisons among treatments mans. The results are summarized as follows: - A- VEGETATIVE GROWTH: -81 - Stem length: 1- Chlormequat chloride at 1000 and 1 5 ppm were significantly shorter in both eggplant varieties and years. However, the diffirences were not si@cant. at 750 in both varieties. 2- Morphactin at 1 ppm treatment insignificantly increased stern length during the first stage in Romi variety in both years. Treatments at 5 and 10 ppm ~i~cantly reduced stem length in Romi variety in the first year. Morphactin treatments significantly reduced stem len@h during thc all stagcs in Baladi black variety in the f& year. 3- The plants treated with mepiquat chloride was no( signikicant mduccd stem length in both eggplant varieties and years. &- Number of brunches/plunt: 1- Chlonnequat chloride at 1000 and 1500 ppm significmtly increased the number of branchedplant in both varieties in the firs* year. The highest nunlber of branches/plant were recorded at 1500 ppm in both varieties. 2- The plants treated with morpllactin significantly increased the number of branches/plant in Romi variety in the first year, but insignificantly increased in the second year. Morphactin treatments sigdkntly increasd dii: number of branches!plaat during the latter stage in Baladi black variety in both years. 3- Mepiquat chloride at 750 and 1000 ppm signtf~cantly increased the number of hrnncl~cslpla~ddu ring tlw lirst SL~~i~n CRSom i vitricty in thc tirst ywr. However all treatments significantly increased the number of branches/plant during the latter stage in Romi variety in both years. a- Number of leaveslplant: 1- Chlormequat chloride at 1500 ppm significantly increased the number of leaves/plant at the middle and lattc=r stages in Korni and Bnladi black variety respectively in both years. 2- Morphactin treatments significantly increased the number- oflsaves/plant during the latter stages in Romi variety in the first year. However7 the differences were not significantly at other stages in both varieties and yem. 3- Mcyicjiial chloridc ill 1000 pp1n signiliciullly ill~r~abc1d1 111nbcr0 1’ lcavcs/plant during the latter stags in Ronii variety in the first ycar. However, the highest number of leaveslplant were recorded at 500 and 750 ppin in Balacli black variety in fmt and second year respectively. -8 4 - hart”a rea: 1- Chlomequat chloride insignificantly increased leaf area during the first stage in both varieties. The plants treated with 1 OQO and 1500 ppm produced the highest leaf area in both varieties during the first stages in both years. 2- Morphadn treatments significantly reduced leaf area during all stages in both vririetics in tht: first yeiir, While id1 n~orphactintr eat~nzntss ignificantly decreased ledarea during the latter stage in both varieties and years. 3- Mepicpat chloride at 1000 ppm signrficantly reduced leaf area at the middle and latter ’tage in Baladi black variety in the first year. However, mepiquat at 750 and 1000 ppm insignificantly inmeased leaf area during all stages in Romi variety in the first year. All treatments significantly reduced le’zf area during the latter stags in Baladi black variety in the second year. @- The root system dry weight: 1- Cl~lormequat chloride at 750 ppm itxignificantly increased root system dry weightlplant in both varieties and years. 2- Morphactin treatments insiguficantly reduced the root system dry weight’plant in Romi variety, while signdicantly reduced it in Baladi black variety in both y cru-s. 3- Mepiquat chloride treatments insignificantly reduced root system dry weightlplant in both varieties and years. 8- The stem and branches dry weightlplant: 1- Chlormequat chloride at 750 ppm treatment ~i~cantinlcyre ased the stem and branches dry weight/plant in both varieties and years. 2- Morphactin levels sigpllficantly increased stem and branches dry weigWplant in Romi variety in both years. Contrast, morphactin treatments at 5 and 10 ppm significantly reduced the stem and branches dry weigl~t’plant in Baladi black variety in both years. 3- Mcyiqual chloridc at 1000 ppnl signilicanlly incrcuscct slca~nd~ b ranches dry weightfplant in Romi variety in both yerus. However, treatments at 750 and 1000 ppm significantly increased stem and branches dry weight/pImt in Baladi black variety in the second year. @- The leaves dry weightfnlant : 1- Chlormequat chloride at 750 and 1000 ppm significantly increased the leaves dry weightlplant in Romi variety in both years, and Baladi black variety in the second year. 2- Morphactin treatments significantly increased the leaves dry weigWplant in . Romi variety in both years. However, the plants treated with morphactin significantly decreased the leaves dry weight in Daladi black variety in both years. 3- Chlormequat at 750 and 1000 ppnl signiiicantly increased the leaves dry weight /plant in Romi variety. However, 750 ppnl signil-icmtly increased the leaves dry weigWplant in Baladi black variety in the second year.
