Abstract
This chapter applied and compared the result of some traditional image filtering methods. The results of this comparison show that the 5x5 average filters gives a good result for smoothing the noise where its variance value is smaller than the others. While, 3x3 average filter gives a good quality of the processed image which is closed to the original image. Combinations methods between different image processing techniques that preserve the edges and reduce the background noise are suggested and applied in some old pictures. Also, it is useful for processed the old image using several image format. Results are presented to illustrate the effect of the proposed adaptive techniques(adaptive multiplicative image scaling , adaptive ? correction , adaptive enhancement median filter, adaptive enhancement mean filter , multi-levels median filter , and multi-levels mean filter) . These methods filter the noise in image while keeping edges and fine details with a very small distortion. The results show that using adaptive methods give better results in reducing the noise, keeping image details, and improving image appearance from human viewer
