Abstract Newborn low birth weight infants have very limited protein and energy reserves, with early aggressive nutritional support they are able to establish positive nitrogen and energy balances to restore growth. TPN being an essential component of nutritional support. During the past 40 years consistent efforts to develop innovative, comprehensive and effective methods of providing nutrition support in the widest range of conditions and clinical situations. Central versus peripheral lines were developed to deliver hyperosmolar solutions. Improvement in solubility, stability and sterilization were developed. Provision of recommended vitamins for growth was problematic. Low birth weight neonates (esp. < 1.5 kg), and premature babies (esp. < 34 weeks gestation) have the high vulnerability to nutritional deficits being growth restricted in utero. They have fewer nutrient reserves and they are more subject to physiological and metabolic stress such as respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and infection. |
