Abstract This study was conducted to find out the effect of long-term OC use on cervical cytology by comparing the results of cervical cytology in different duration of usage with that of non-users. This study was carried out on 200 women attending Al-Menoufyia University Hospitals, the maternity health care units and family planning centres in Shebeen Al-Kom .Governorate. 150 of these women were using OCs as the method of choice of their fertility control for different years. The other 50 women were not using OCs, and using IUDs. Women were grouped into four groups: I- Fifty women used OCs for 2 years. II- Fifty women used OCs for 4 years. III- Fifty women used OCs for more than 5 years. IV- Fifty women who have used RIDs as the method of their fertility control and who have not used OCs. There are two reasons for choosing the control group IUD users. The first is that the IUD, like OCs, does not protect the cervix from direct contact with seminal fluid and/or infectious agents. The second reason is that most studies done to study the possible relation between IUD and cervical neoplasia, concluded that there is no evidence of any increased risk. All cases included in the study were submitted to the following: 1. Complete history taking. 2. Thorough clinical examination. 3- ceveral smear taking, using ayre’s spatula. |
