Abstract

Soil mites are comidered the most important secondary decemposers of the s o i l fauna. Acarina in general, and O r i - b a t e i i n p a r t i c u l a r are the most important mites inhabiting c u l t i v a t e d s o i l s . Their a c i t i v i t y might be of great importance f o r the l i f e of the s o i l and the processes of energy tumover, Much work has been done on the o r i b a t i d mites i n various parts of the world, I n Egypt, however, the o r i b a t i d mite remained unknown until1 recent years; and the appearance of Baloghts identic a t i o n keya of world mites f a c i l i t a t e d i d e n t i f i c a t i o n of soil o r i b a t i d mites by several s o i l zoologists. The present i n v e s t i g a t i o n has two purposes: - ~axonomica.!l s t u d i e s and some . - Ecological study. - Taxonomical studies: The present i n v e s t i g a t i o n gives some l i g h t about the d i f f e r e n t taxa of o r i b a t i d mites and t h e i r d i s t r i b u t i o n along the Northern coast of Egypt, The survey areas included 13 selected l o c a l i t i e s ( Rafah, Al-Areish, Port-Poad, Port-Said, Ras El-Barr, Gemasah , Baltim, Rashid, Alexandria, Burg El-Arab, El- Alamein, El-Dabaa and Matrouh ) s i t u a t e d along the Nor them Coast of Egypt. For q u a l i t a t i v e purpose, s o i l samples under d i f f e r - ent vegetations, were collected from t h e s e l e c t e d locol i t i e s . O r i b a t i d mites were separated and i d e n t i f i e d , The redescription: of the previously known Egyptian 22 species are presented. Rediscription of 3 species, which were not previously recorded i n Egypt, is also given. These are: Haplochthonius sanctaeluciae Grandj ean, 1947; Arnerono t hrus linectus (~horel,l 1871) and Scapheremaeus corniger(~erlese, 1908). Six new species and one subspec i e s a r e de s c r ibed f o r t h e first time. These are t A-rchiphthiracorua heterotrichus, Entomo tritia hamidiensis, Zygoribatula bay omensla , Zygoribatula hamidiensis, Passalozetes dermatoglyphw, Salpasozetes saharaiensis and Sphaerochthoniua aegypt icue. Ecological study : in order to study the seasonal popul a t i o n dynamics of the o r i b a t i d mites, as well as the effec t of t h e d i f f e r e n t ecological f a c t o r s on t h e i r d i s t r i b u t - ion, two l o c a l i t i e s were selected, the first ( at Dumyat ) lies along the Mediterranean coast, whereas the second one ( At Xafr El - Sheikh ) lies within the Nile Delta, Both l o c a l i t i e s were planted with Guava trees, Sampling took place during a period of one gear, from November, 1984 till October, 1965, using a qudrangular metal cores ( 10 x 10 x 5 Cm ), Sixteen monthly samplea were collected from each l o c a l i t y . Each sample was divided i n t o 4 depths; i.e.(O - 51, (5 - 16,(10 - 15) and (15 - 20 Cm). I n addition, the phgsico-chemicd factors of ’the diff e r e n t s o i l depths were measured during each sampling occasion. The processes of extraction, separation, preservation and i d e n t i f i c a t i o n were c a r r i e d out according to Balogh ( 1972 ) and Balogh and Mahunka ( 1983 1, The r e s u l t s revealed t h a t a t o t a l number of 29 species of o r i b a t i d mites existed i n the two h a b i t a t s , of which 12 species were present i n both l o c a l i t i e s , 14 species were r e s t r i c t e d to Dumyat l o c a l i t y , compared with 4 species i n Kafr El - Sheikh l o c a l i t y . Thus a t o t a l of 25 species were recorded from Dumyat l o c a l i t y and 15 apeties from Kafr El-Sheikh. The average annual population density of the t o t a l o r i b a t i d mi tes wa s 5025 and 625 individuals/m 2 i n Durnyat and Kafr El-Sheikh localitie,~ r e s p e c t i v e l y . The obtained d a t a i n d i c a t e t h a t there are great differences beheen the two localities, aince the similarity c o e f f i c i e n t between the two ia 30 percent. The present inves tigation a t t r i b u t e d t h i s difference to the wide v a r i a t i o n in the ecological f a c t o r s between the two l o c a l i t i e s . I n general, the species and individual numbers increase during ~utumn and early Winter; whereas it decrease i n Summer months.
