Abstract An epidemiologic study, of nosocomial S. aureus infection in Tanta University Hospital, that occurred between January and November 1994, was carried out to investigate whether infection was due to epidemic spread of a single strain between different departments or due to multiple distinct strains. The role of medical staff members in spreading of such infection was also investigated. To carry out this study, one of the recent molecular typing methods which is ”plasmid profile” and one of the old traditional methods that is ”antibiotic susceptibility pattern” were used. These 2 methods are well established as a successful combination for tracing of nosocomial infections caused by S. aureus. A bacteriologic swab was taken from infected postoperative clean wounds from General Surgery and Plastic Surgery Departments in addition to swabs from infected burns in Bum Unit. Nasal swabs were also taken from the nares of a number of medical staff members, who are working in such depqrtments. |
