Abstract
The present study was conceived in an effort to investipte : (1) the genetic, phenotypic, and enviromental variances and covariances among t r i a t s in two different populations of Egyptian cotton; Giza 70 X Ashrnouni cross and Giza 68 open-pollinated variety,’ (2) to estimate the magnitudes of the pnotypic and phenotyl2 ic correlations betrrreen t r a i t s , and (3) to compare the relative efficien.cies of seven selection indices constructed by formal s t a t i s t i c a l pro ceclures and actual prices of the three t r a i t s inclucling lint yield were used in estimatins the econonic weizhts, In each population, the 50 vlants having the hiyhcst l i n t yield in each 01 F2 and So wre used as f ounda-t ion genetic mater ial in the two populations and from these a l l the subsequent material has descended, selection in Giza 70 X Ashaouni cross was continued throuzh FF, , F4 and F while selsc-tion within Giza 68 J 5 variety was proceeded throueh Sl , S2, and S generations. 3 In e,?.cli ceneration selfed seccl of each plnnt was divided into tm parts, The f i r s t was grown in a replicated experimcnt devoted to each varicty. The remaining s i s t e r seed f o r each plant was grown nearby in a two non-replicated nursery rows.
