Abstract

Hydroforming or hydraulic forming has been one of the fundamental sheet metal forming processes for quite a long time, having been developed in the last 50 years in order to overcome some problems inherent in the conventional deep drawing with rigid tools. The object of such processes is to increase the drawing ratio, minimize the thickness variation of the drawing cups, reducing the tooling cost especially for irregularly shaped components. Hydroforming process was experimentally and numerically studied as a means for shaping aluminum alloy sheets. In stamp hydroforming, a rigid die was used and the pressure was act as a punch. Numerically thickness variation, equivalent plastic strain and equivalent von misses stress were discussed by designing a numerical model using MSC.Marc program which suitable for large deformation. Experimentally thickness variation, equivalent plastic strain and surface roughness were measured and discussed over drawn cups and comparing the excremental with the numerical which were in good agreement for thickness variation and plastic strain. Surface roughness was measured before drawing and after drawing was measured at five regions and comparing this measured with the roughness before drawing. The deference of the roughness at the five regions of the drawn cups was discussed in details.
