Abstract This study was conducted to: 1. Study the effect of age on the change in position of mandibular canal starting from the mandibular foramen to mental foramen. 2. Detect any variations in the canal shape during its course. Five hundred children contributed in this study. They were selected from Pediatric Dental Clinic, Faculty of Dentistry, Mansura University. Their age ranged from 3-12. The selected children were radiographed for panoramic x-ray as a part of the routine treatment that was being rendered to them. The selected radiographic films were divided into ten age groups ranged between 3and12 years at one year interval. Fifty panoramic radiographic films were examined for each age group. The images of the mandibular canal position and its variations in shape for each inspected radiograph were recorded by using Photoshop and AutoCAD2010 computer programs. The results of this study showed that mandibular canal changes its position in respect to normal growth, development, and the eruption of teeth. Bifid mandibular canals were found in 5 radiographs, with a prevalence of 1%. Bilateral bifid canal was found in 2 cases and Unilateral bifid canal was found in 3 cases. |
