Abstract

The heterogeneity of schizophrenia symptoms is well documented. The positive and negative distinction is limited to cover the entire spectrum of schizophrenia phenomenology. Aim of the present study was to find out what are the major symptom dimensions under-lying phenomenology in sample of schizophrenic patients and to test the correlation between these dimensions and external variables. Material and methods: we recruited 100 schizophrenic patients. Diagnosis were based on DSM IV criteria. PANSS was used to asses schizophrenia symptoms Patient score were subjected to factor analysis with Varimax rotation. Internal consistency was determined by use of Cronbachs alpha. External validity of the dimensions derived was investigated by searching for possible correlations between dimensions and demographic and clinical variables by use Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: Five dimensions (factors) produced: negative, excitement, positive, depressive and cognitive dimensions. Internal consistency was quite satisfactory where as external validity was found to be more or less acceptable.
