Abstract Euphorbia tirucalli L. (Euphorbiaceae); is a leafless succulent shrub or tree. It spreads over all tropical regions in the world and in east Africa. It used in folk medicine for the treatment of many diseases and used as a fish poison for fishing. Additionally it is used as a source of biofuel. Processing of E. tirucalli revealed the isolation, characterization and structure elucidation of forty two compounds, which can be classified into seven triterpenoids, two steroids, one nortriterpenoid, seven sesquiterpenoids , eight from and their derivatives, twelve linear waxy hydrocarbons in addition to five miscellaneous compounds. The isolated compounds were identified by spectroscopic methods, such as MS, GC/MS, 1H NMR and IR. This is the first report of β-amyrinone from this species as well as the first investigation of the volatile components of this species. |
