Abstract This work was carried out in the laboratories of the Animal&poultry production department, faculty of Agriculture, Mansoura university. Poor quality roughages from soyabean straw, rice straw and maize stalks were studied representing 50% of the agricultural residence in Egypt.nine healthy adult rams were used in 16 metabolism trials, for evaluating digestibilities and feeding value of the alkali treated roughages. The treatments included the application of 0.2% NaOH, 0.3%NaOH, 0.2% ca (OH)2 and 1%ca (OH2)on the chemical compsition, dry matter intake, digestion coefficients of nutrients, nitrogen balance and the feeding value of the examined riughages before and after the treatment. Results obtained are summarized as follows : Chemical compsition of treated roughages with either NaOH or ca (OH2) decreased the CF, NDF, ADF, hemicellulose, cellulose and ADKL.the om decreased by treatment with rice straw and maize stalks , increased with soyabean straw. The CP of the alkali treated roughages showed decreases in most cases with apparent increase in the rice straw treated by 0.2 and 0.3 % NaOH as well as with 0.2% ca(OH2). The EE content of treated roughages showed slight increases . the ash content increased by treaing rice straw and maize stalks but decreased with soyabean straw. |
