Abstract This study aims to use one of the applications of radioisotopes; radioimmunoassay as a partial diagnostic tool of diabetes mellitus (DM) induced in female albino rats and thyroid function disorder associated with diabetes mellitus. In addition, to study the efficacy of Aloe vera whole leaf juice filtrate as an anti-oxidant to ameliorate the glucose level in diabetic rats. Eighty female albino rats were equally divided into the following 4 groups: Group I: The normal control group, Group II: Consisted of rats intraperitoneally injected with alloxan, Group III: Experimentally diabetic rats induced by alloxan, followed by oral administration with l of Aloe vera whole leaf juice filtrate, Group IV: Non-diabetic rats received only 0.25 ml of Aloe vera juice filtrates. Biochemical analyses were carried out in serum of all animal groups included; glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-c, calculation of antiatherogenic index (AAI), TBARs, total antioxidant capacity, insulin, total T3, total T4, and T3 : T4 ratio. Diabetes mellitus has been found to be associated with thyroid function disorder; including a decrease in serum T3 and T4 levels as well as hyperlipidemic effect. Diabetes mellitus has been found to reduce the total antioxidant capacity in induced diabetic female rats. The administration of Aloe vera may be able to reduce hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia related to the risk of diabetes mellitus in experimental animals. On the other hand, Aloe vera has a hypothyroid effect on induced diabetic rats as seen in reduced serum T3 and T4. Our results suggest that special attention to Aloe vera lead to obtain novel drugs in the management of diabetes mellitus. There is ongoing research to isolate and characterize the bioactive compound(s) responsible for the antidiabetic/anti-oxidative action of Aloe vera. |
