Abstract

Among the lesionsof oral mucosa, erosion and ulceration are the most frequently encountered in clinical practice and remain a problem with the respect to differential diagnosis and management. Many skin diseases produce at some stage in their development oral changes, which may be part of the primary disease process they may be a complication of these diseases. In such diseases, the involvement of the oral and skin lesions often occur together, and furthermore, changes in the oral cavity may mark the onset the disease, and precede the skin lesions by few weeks to few months. So oral diagnosis is important for determination of such diseases. Biopsy, histological and immunological studies are means by which definitive diagnosis can be reached. Both pemphigus and lichen planus are dermatological diseases which commonly involve the oral mucosal tissues. Pemphigus vulgaris is a potentially fatal disease involving the skin and oral mucosa, the oral mucosa is often the first site of involvement, where it appears as bullae which rupture leaving a painful ulceration. Although many cases of pemphigus vulgaris may be diagnosed by light microscopy, the significance of immunofluorescence in establishing the diagnosis of pemphigus vulgaris seems.
