Abstract

There is overwhelming evidence for a major contribu¬tion of genetic elements to the aetiology of schizophrenia The principaL problem which remaind,is the nature and extdnt of hereditary contribution and the path through which genetic information is translated into a frank disorder. The aim of this work is to investigate the genetic role in the development of adult and childhood schizophrenia. For this purpose 110 adult and 8 childhood schizoph¬renics were taken up consecutively from the psychiatric out_patient clinic and admitted to the psychiatric department of Mansoura University hospital. Three subtypes of adult schizophrenia:;paranoid, undifferentiated and catatonic,were diagnosed according to DSMIII criteria. The childhood group was diagnosed according to criteria given by Creak (1961). The age of all adult schizophrenics ranged from 20 to 40 years they were, 70 males and 40 females.
