Abstract

The interatrial septum forms during the first and second months of fetal life. The interatrial septum plays an important role in intra-atrial as well as interatrial conduction. Atrial septal defect is a relatively common heart malformation that occurs when the interatrial septum fails to develop properly. Interatrial septal abnormalities as atrial septal defect and patent foramen ovale were found to have a close relationship with certain neurological conditions as strock, migraine and decompression illness. Detection of the interatrial septum may be difficult with transthoracic echocardiography in adults. Transoesophageal echocardiography provides high resolution images of the interatrial septum. But echocardiography is limited by a small field of view and operator dependence. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging have important roles in overcoming these limitations. Computed tomography may be a modality for the assessment of atrial septal masses. Magnetic resonance imaging offers superior temporal resolution and soft tissue characterization and a great ability in the evaluation of atrial septal masses.
