Abstract Ultrasonography is a non-invasive, relatively inexpensive, and easily available technique that has the additional advantage of not utilizing ionizing radiation in the evaluation of patients complaining of painful calf. Familiarity with the characteristic sonographic findings of these common abnormal conditions affecting the calf will allow differentiation and an accurate diagnosis. Duplex sonography is now accepted as the initial diagnostic test of choice in patients suspected of having popliteal DVT and arterial ischemia. Ultrasound facilitates evaluation of a wide variety of muscle abnormalities. Inflammatory conditions are well depicted. Although sonography is somewhat non-specific in the evaluation of a soft-tissue mass, it can be used to determine the size and to differentiate a cystic from a solid mass. US should not be viewed as a competing imaging method but rather as a complementary imaging method |
