Abstract Alcohol abuse is so widespread, and its associated illnesses are among the most common problems worldwide. Alcohol use is related to morbidity affecting various systems in human body. Alcohol-induced tissue damage is partly associated nutritional deficiencies and partly to direct toxic effects, which have been linked to the metabolism of ethanol. A number of systems that generate oxygen free radicals and ROS are activated by excessive ethanol consumption. Ethanol are one of its metabolic product acetaldehyde could impair body systems as it cause hypoxia, act as oxidant, formation of ROS and RNS, reduced glycolytic ATP, increased oxidative stress, depletion of GSH and non protein sulphahydral concentration as well as damage molecular structure as DNA or lipoproteins. The use of Urtica, honey bee as protective agents reduced most of these abnormalities. The enhanced protection caused by Urtica dioica may be due to: - polyphenol content that exerts a large array of biological actions such as free radical scavenging, metal chelation and enzyme modulation. The protection of honey may be due to: -the release of protective agents and the involvement of SH group in the protective mechanism of honey, endogenous SH compounds have been reported to be efficient antioxidants in all tissues. Consequently, Urtica dioica and honey treatment were useful to some extent in minimize the hazardous effects resulting from alcohol abuse. |
