Abstract Tow pot experiments were conducted at El-Mansoura laboratory for plant nutrition; Agricultural Research Center during the tow successive summer seasons of 2004 and 2005 to study the effect of salinity levels and some remedy treatments on cotton plant ( Gossypium barbadense L. ) cv . Giza 86 .Factorial randomized complete block design was adapted in this study. Five treatments of salinity (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 %) were used. Before sowing, cotton seeds were soaked for 12 hours in a stock solution of cytokinin (50 ppm ) or prolein (10 ppm) as well as in tap water as a control treatment .Irrigation was carried out once as surface irrigation and the other in subsurface way . Increasing soil salinity levels from 0.2 to 1.0% led to decrease growth parameter, dry matter, N, P, K, and chlorophyll. Soaking cotton seeds in either cytokinin or proline counteract the bad effect of salinity.Ca, Mg and Na increased with increasing soil salinity levels. Treating cotton seeds by soaking in cytokinin or proline decreased the values of these mineral nutrients compared to the untreated plants. Yield and yield components decreased with increasing levels of soil salinity. Application of cytokinin or proline acted to minimize the adverse effect of soil salinity. On the other hand; cytokinin was more effective than proline at 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6% salinity levels while, proline gave better effect than cytokinin at 0.8 and 1.0% salinity levels. This study might be of essential importance in regions of Northern Egypt, where saline conditions prevail. So we recommend making field application for this study and in other regions to be give recommendation. |
