The present research aimed at developing Geography department student’s knowledge of the geography of their local environment and teaching them reading , comprehension and interpretation skills of their locale’s map as well as teaching them decision-making in issues and problems related to their governorate . The problem of the research lies in that geography teacher education program at faculty of education includes inadequate information about the local geography of Damietta governorate where the faculty of education students lives. Therefore, there is deficiency in students’ knowledge of the local geography of their governerate besides, there’s deficiency in their performance level of map and decision - making skills. The researcher determined the research problem in the following basic question: ”what is the effectiveness of a proposed program on the local geography of Damietta governerate in developing some map and decision- making skills among Geography department students at faculty of education? ” This question is branched out into the following sub-questions: 1-What topics in the local geography of Damietta governerate should be included in the geography teacher education program at Damietta faculty of education? 2-To what extent does the Geography teacher education program at Damietta faculty of education include topics on the local geography of Damietta governerate? 3-What is the level of fourth year, Geography department students’ knowledge of the local geography of their governerate? 4-What map skills should be acquired by geography department students at faculty of education? 5-What decision-making skills should be acquired by geography department students at faculty of education? 6-What is the proposed framework of a program on the local geography of Damietta governerate for Geography department students at Damietta faculty of education? 7-What is the effectiveness of teaching the proposed program to the Geography department students at faculty of education in : a)Increasing student’ achievement of the topics included? b)Developing some map skills of those students? c)Developing some decision-making skills of those students? The researcher prepared the following instruments: a)A list of local geograph topics of Damietta governerate. b)A list of map skills. c)A list of the decision-making skills. d)A diagnostic test local geography of Damietta governerate on the•A map skills test. •A decision-making skills test. •An achievement test on the topics include in the proposed local geography program. The researcher prepared the proposed program on the local geography of Damietta governerate in the form of educational modules. The program consisted of fifteen modules, and it was administered to a sample of forty one geography department students at Damietta faculty of education for the first semester of the academic year 2006 – 2007. The experimentation lasted 87 days – namely, approximately thirteen weeks. The experimental study procedures went as follows: •Administering the achievement test and the map skills and decision_making tests (pre-tests) to the research group students. •Teaching the proposed program on the local geography of Damietta governerate to the research group students. •Administering the achievement test and map skills and decision-making skills tests (post-tests) to the research group students. •Correcting, recording and statistically analyzing the tests and judging the effectiveness of the program The research results are summed up as follows: •The program on the local geography of Damietta faculty using educational modules proved highly effective in increasing fourth year, geography department students’ achievement of the topics included, at Damietta faculty of education, and also in developing the following map skills: reading, interpreting and analyzing, as well as developing their decision-making skills. •There is a positive and significant correlation among fourth year Geography department students’ scores in the achievement test items on the local geography of Damietta governerate. •There is a positive and significant correlation between fourth year, geography department students’ scores in the achievement test on the local geography of Damietta governerate and their scores in the decision-making test. Finally, the researcher presented recommendations and suggestions for future research.
