Abstract

Unconj ugated hyperbi1irubinemia ”UCHB” is the most problem experienced by the full term infants during irnmediate neonatal period and about 30-80% of all from hyperbilirubinemia sometime during the week of life. A causal relationship’ between UCHB and encephalopathy ”Kernicterus” is well established. In our study. we have evaluated the role of blood group ncompetibi1ities as the commonest cause of ear1y transient In order to achieve this. we have studied 92 newborns from UCHB with serum bilirubin level >12 mg/dl in the first week of life. According to the etiological diagnosis. they were classified into 5 groups: I: ABO incompatibility 30 cases. II: Rh incompatibility 12 cases. III: Minor incompatibility 2 cases. Group IV: Neonatal infection 8 cases. Group V: Physiological hyperbilirubinemia 40 cases. Thirteen normal fullterm newborns were taken as a control.
