Abstract

This study was carried out to assess the effect of low-energy laser on experimentally induced OA in the knee joints of rabbits. , Ten rabbits were used as normal control and fifty rabbits were utilized for induction of arthritis by intra-articular injection of papain solution in both knee joints of each rabbit. Two weeks after papain injection, the forty arthritic rabbits were divided into group I and group II ( 20 rabbits each) to evaluate the effect of low dose and high dose of laser irradiation respectively on papain induced arthritis. The left knee joints of rabbits in both group I and group II were protected with dark thick cardboard and acted as controls while the right knee joints of rabbits in both groups were irradiated with non contact continuous Ga. AI-As laser (830 nm, 90 m W) daily for 6 weeks. However, the right knee joints in group I were irradiated for 5 min’!session with a dose of 27J. while the right knee joints in group II were irradiated for 10 min.lsession with a higher dose of 54J. Both knee joints of rabbits in group I and group II were subjected before the start and after the end of laser treatment course to the following :- 1- Clinical measurements of joint circumference, ROM and pressure¬pain threshold. 2- - Grading of radiographic abnormalities.
