Abstract

Oxidative stress could be important phlenomenon leading to melanocytes death in vitiligo, oxidative stress may be induced by increasing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and a decrease in antioxidant levels. Objectives: In the present study we aimed to assess the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of vitiligo. Methods: Glutathione peroxidase enzyme (GSHPX), Glutathione (GSH), total antioxidant status (TAS) and Malondialdhyde (MDA) were investigated in the blood of 41 vitiligo patients and 13 healthy controls. Results: Our results indicated that significantly decreased levels of GSHPX activity, GSH and TAS were associated with significant increased levels of MDA in vitiligo patients whatever the disease was generalized or localized active or stable. Conclusion: Our observations suggest that the presence of an imbalance in the oxidantantioxidant system might play a role in the pathogenesis of vitiligo. Our results further support the concept that free radicalmediated damage may be the initial pathogenic event in melanocyte degeneration in vitiligo.
