Abstract Diabetes is characterized by hyperglycemia and a markedly diminished insulin function. Over the long term of hyperglycemia generates a large number of ROS, which induce cell oxidative stress. Oxidative stress results from a disturbance in the balance between the formation of free radicals in the body and scavenging of these radicals. These ROS damage the function of all cell macromolecules and organelles. In physiological processes, antioxidative enzymes and different antioxidants protect the cells against harmful free radicals. Thus antioxidant administration would be beneficial in the treatment of diabetes. Melatonin, the chief secretory product of the pineal gland, is a potent free radical scavenger and antioxidant. The present study was undertaken to investigate the impact of oxidative stress in diabetesinduced tissue damage in rat. In addition to investigate if melatonin can be modulate the oxidative stress induced by diabetes mellitus. The present study showed that melatonin have the ability to protect the liver from oxidative damage induced by diabetes. This antioxidative effect was clearly indicated by the amelioration of the measured biochemical parameters. Additionally, melatonin maintained the loss of cellular antioxidants resulted from diabetes. Also, melatonin influences cellular and humoral immune response. |
