Abstract Exposure to drugs and toxins is a major cause for patients visits to the emergency department. A menu of important serum and urine toxicological tests is prepared for clinical laboratories who provide clinical toxicological services. The present work was conducted on one hundred and fifty randomly selected comatose patients obtained from Mansoura University Hospitals to determine the aetiology, presentation and outcome of nontraumatic coma. It has been observed from this study results that sex difference had no significant influence on the incidence of coma. MABP was the main vital sign which can be used to identify brain lesion in comatose patient. The commonest cause of coma in pediatric was infection followed by toxicity and epilepsy. The other causes were metabolic, cerebral stroke, brain tumour, cardiac, renal, burn, and hepatic causes respectively. While the commonest cause of coma in adult was cerebral stroke followed by intoxication, hepatic, metabolic, renal, infections, epilepsy, cardiac, brain tumour and burn respectively. The commonest detected substance abuse was cannabis, followed by benzodiazepines, opiates and barbiturates. Also drug and substance of abuse were detected only in G2 and G3 (adolescents and adults). |
