Abstract This thesis was devoted to carry out spectroscopic studies on the radiation induced structural changes in a biological system of wholebody irradiated experimental animals. Female rats have been chosen for this study. The rats have been divided into 5 groups A, B, C, D and E. Every group consisted of 5 rats. Group A considered being the control on (unirradiated). Gamma radiation of different doses 1, 2, 4 and 6 Gy was used as ionizing radiation. The rats were exposed to gamma radiation and they were partially anesthetized after one hour of exposure, then blood samples withdrawn and hemoglobin was extracted. Two spectroscopic techniques; namely the optical spectroscopic techniques such as FTIR, UV/VISIBLEabsorption, fluorescence emission and Dielectric spectroscopy, have been applied to explore the structural changes of the hemoglobin due to gamma irradiation. The recorded FTIR and UV/Visible spectra reveal the existence of the absorption bands of amides IIV. The ratio A578/A540 was calculated for all samples and the results revealed that this ratio for all doses is slightly greater than unity indicating that there was no change in the Oxyhemoglobin due to the gamma irradiation. |
