Abstract This thesis is a trial to shed more light on the utilization of functionalized polymers in solving one of the most serious environmental problems that faces our society nowadays, which is ?water pollution?. The present research project is aiming to purify synthetic wastewater from some organic and inorganic pollutants using polymeric materials. Therefore, the work has been divided mainly into two parts. One of them deals with the removal of phenol as one of the most dangerous organic pollutants. The other part includes the removal of some heavy metal ions, namely; cupper, cobalt and nickel from synthetic wastewater. Such metal ions can be considered as representatives for the most common inorganic pollutants. In all case, chemically modified polymeric materials based mainly on chemical modifications of chloromethylated polystyrene have been employed for the removal of these pollutants. Moreover, some trials were carried out to use phenol formaldehydebased resins. |
