Abstract This study basically aims to investigate CL: its place and role as a branch of applied linguistics, its function and its significance in the process of transfer and in language pedagogy in general. CL emerged to study languages in contrast as well as languages in contact. It is basically grounded on the concept of interference between the TL and the SL. Sometimes it transcends this to cover the whole system of the two languages. Throughout the context of the research, CL models namely: CA, EA, and analysis of Interlanguage are discussed. The main concern of the experimental part of this thesis is targeted to investigate, diagnose and analyze some of the most common translation problems of English and Arabic syntactic, lexical and cultural through the analysis of the 2nd and 4th year students? responses who study English as a FL. On basis of the investigation of some sample errors collected from the students? answer sheets, it is concluded that these errors are attributed to a mass of factors which are discussed through the context of the research. The thesis is concluded with some pedagogical recommendations to the problems investigated. |
