Abstract Over the last century, the crime rate has increased over 200% worldwide. The crime clearance rate remained relatively low. Forensic science has become the major force in solving crimes. This study aimed at reviewing researches and literatures concerning the advances in some aspects of forensic science. The procedures carried out for the estimation of the postmortem interval has faced many advances in the last years. This estimate is considered the Achilles tendon in forensic practice. Also, advances in DNA typing techniques and completion of the Human Genome Project were reflected upon the forensic practice. The subject of brain death and the arguments about are discussed in details with different guidelines settled to describe this conflicting problem for both medical and legal professions. The introduction of virtopsy and laser techniques in forensic practice is also reviewed with detailed description of their benefits and advantages in forensic case work. |
