Abstract

There is a real need for precisely defining of the most suitable age for cleft palate surgery. Our study was done on 60 dogs divided into four groups three experimental groups and a control group, each experimental (surgical) group contains 16 animals. The control group contain 12 animals. In the experimental groups A. B and C palatal surgery was done at three different stages of development :- Group A : during eruption of deciduous dentition (aging 1.5 months). Group B : during the period of mixed dentition (aging 4 months). Group C : after the completion of permanent dentition (aging 8 months) Each group was divided into two subgroups I and 2 according to whether the surgery was done with or without bone defect, in subgroups A 1 , B I and Cl surgery was done without bone defect while in subgroups A2 , B2 and C2 surgery was done with bone defect. A surgical procedure of Von Langenbeck Technique were carried out. In subgroups A1,B1 and Cl an elliptical soft tissue defect was made in the median region of the palate, two relaxation incisions adjacent to posterior teeth were done and the palatal mucoperiosteum elevated and closed. The median region of the palate sutured with vicryl. Denuded bones were left adjacent to posterior teeth. At subgroups A2 & B2 and C2 bone defect in median region was carried in addition to the previous procedures. Radiographic examination was done immediately after sacrif’ing the animals by occiusal and lateral radiographs. Histological and histochemical examination:Subgroups Al, B 1, and C 1, were sacrified one week and two weeks after surgery while the animals of subgroups A2, B2, and C2 were scarified 3 weeks and 4 months (long duration) after surgery.
