Abstract The vitamin K-dependent (VDK) plasma proteins consist of two group, the procoagulants (factors II, VII, IX and X) as well as the anticoagulants (protein C and protein S) and cofactor protein Z. Factors II, IX and X are key players in the intrinsic pathway, factor VII participates in the extrinsic pathway, and protein C, S and Z function as negative regulators of coagulation. The PT test is used for assessment in pre-operative detection of bleeding tendencies in risk groups, the monitoring of anticoagulant therapy; used for prevention and treatment of venous thromboemolism, prosthetic heart valves, artrial fibrillation and other indications. |
