Abstract 60 adult patients ASA I or II aged 20-50 years submitted for orthopaedic lower limb surgery were the subject of this study. The aim of this work was to determine whether the addition of epidural fentanyl to morphine improves postoperative analgesia compared to epidural morphine alone and to optimize the dose of epidural morphine. from these study we concluded that the addition of fentanyl to epidural morphine improves the quality of postoperative analgesia and prolongs the duration of analgesia compared with epidural morphine alone without altering incidence of side effects. Under the circumstances of our study protocol and of the combination doses studied, the most effective combination dose seems to be 4 mg morphine + 100 ug fentanyl for lower limb orthopaedic surgery. |
