Abstract

Muscle diseases are very important entity of paediatric diseases, so, muscle biopsy is essential to make an accurate diagnosis of muscle diseases based on histological and enzyme histochemistry together with good clinical data other investigations. There are many classifications but the most popular is that of Walton et al, (1994) who classified neuromuscular diseases into 2 major categories myopathic and neurogenic. This study included 47 cases of children suffering from muscle diseases. The age of the patients ranges from two months up to 14 years with mean age 3 6/12years. The male to female ratio in this study was 28: 19 cases were classified into 4 main groups according to the classification introduced by the world federation of neurology (Walton et al., 1994). The study show also that diagnosis of muscle diseases require good clinical history to exclude other similar diseases, certain investigations as electromyogram to differentiate neurogenic from other myopathic disorder, Creatinine phosphokinase is essential to diagnose specific diseases, exclude other similar disorders and finally selected cases to be exposed to muscle biopsy as it is an invasive technique required to answer questions of both clinician and pathologist which can not be answered without biopsy, muscle biopsy is the definitive test for diagnosis of specific muscle disease if a child is suffering from neuromuscular disorder with normal investigations; however muscle biopsy may not be diagnostic in the course of an illness when the abnormalities are scant and a sampling error can mask the pathologic condition, the pathologic condition may also escape diagnosis late in the course of a disease if the muscle is so altered that no distinguishing features exist( end stage muscle ).
