Abstract Helicobacter pylori are gram-negative spiral bacteria (Skirrol, 1982). Warren and Marshal, (1983) found Helicobacter pylori in gastric mucosal biopsies taken from patients with chronic active gastritis. Helicobacter pylori has strong urease activity. Ammonia produced by Helicobacter pylori can be a source of systemic ammonia in patients with hepatic dysfunction (Miyaj i et al., 1997). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect ofH.pylori infection on blood ammonia level in patients with chronic hepatic encephalopathy and whether the presence of infection or its eradication affect parameters used to assess hepatic encephalopathy. The study was conducted on 55 male patients with chronic hepatic encephalopathy, divided into two groups: group I (29 H.pylori +ve cases) and group II (26 H.pylori -ve cases). All patients were submitted to: - Thorough history taking and thorough c1inir,al examination. - Venous blood ammonia was determined at baseline. |
