Abstract

Apoptosis is important as well as cell proliferation in the regulation and control of cell population, counterbalance mitosis and maintaining tissue homeostasis . The present study includes (40) patients with chronic liver disease of different aetiologies (37 males and 3 females) with age ranging between 25-68 years . They were selected from the in¬patient and outpatient clinics of Medical Department, Mansoura University and Emergency Hospitals. They were classified into 4 groups according to the aetiology of chronic liver illness . All patients were subjecetd to thorough history and clinical examination, routine laboratory investigations, rectal snip & mucosal biopsy to assess bilharzial infection and liver biopsy for immunohistochemical staining to assess the apoptotic and proliferative indices. Apoptosis is actually present and increases in chronic liver disease caused by chronic HeV & HBV infection and hepatic sehistosotniasis.
