Abstract The present study was conducted to study the interrelationship between GH,- IGF- I and IGFBP-3 with anterior pituitary hormones and testosterone in cases of male delayed puberty. The material of the study is composed of 16 male patients with delayed puberty (mean age 15.99 + 1.79 SD) and a matched control group composed of 7 patients (mean age 15.24 + 0.87 SD). All were selected from outpatient clinics of Andrology and Endocinology departments, Mansoura University Hospitals. They were subjected to thorough history and clinical examination related to their complaint. Routine laboratory investigations were carried out to exclude those having chronic diseases. All subjects refrained from taking any medication during 2 weeks preceeding hospitalization. At day one; 3 consequetive nocturnal blood samples followed by 3 diurnal samples were withdrawn, sera were separated and divided into aliquotes for estimation of anterior pituitary hormones and testosterone. Next day, and following an overnight fast, clonidine stimulation test was performed and samples were withdrawn for estimation of GK IGF- I and IGFBP-3. Results showed that except for total and free testosterone in patients < 15 years and for FSH in the 3 studied groups, a nocturnal increase in PRL,- LH and testosterone is observed in control and patients groups. Consequent to the nocturnal rise in these hormones the nocturnal-diurnal differences are observed especially for GH in patients > 15 years and testosterone in patients < 15 years. |
