Abstract

Computed tomography of the abdomen has had its principle application and success in the evaluation of the liver, spleen, pancreas and retroperitoneum, but it has been generally assumed that the method is not sufficiently sensitive for the study and evaluation of disease affecting the hollow viscera of the GI tract. Double contrast barium studies are expected to be highly accurate in outlining mucosal alternation resulting from mass lesions. CT, however, provides direct imaging of i ntral uminal, mural and serosal abnormal ities as we11 as, it provides information regarding the extra-visceral structures and their relationship to the gut, mesentry, lymph nodes, blood vessels, retroperitoneum and solid organs and hence, its ability in staging malignant. neoplasms of the alimentary tract. Small number of cases wit.h both barium-st.udies and CT scanning correlation have been report.ed previously, most. of which were retrospective. In addition much controversy about the role of CT in evaluating GI tract neoplastic processes was noted from this studies. Consequently addi tional studies were needed to define the utility of additing CT scanning in the evaluation of focal mass lesions in the GI tract. Hence was this prospective study including 59 patients with.
