Abstract

Osteoarthritis represents the most prevalent rheumatic disorder affecting the muscloskeletal system. OA of the knee is of special concern because it is one of the commonest causes of pain and disability in the community. Patients with osteoarthritis are routinely tested for muscle strength to aid in planning treatment and to monitor progress. The ratio of quadriceps to hamstring muscle strength is important for the stability of the knee and for protection from excessive stress. This study was carried out to assess digital myometry as a modern tool for muscle power evaluation, to compare it with conventional manual muscle power examination in cases of osteoarthritis of the knee and to asses its value in asymptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee. Subjects in this study were divided into 3 groups, Group I comprised thirty patients (l O males & 20 females) with osteoarthritis of the knee, diagnosed clinically and radiologically. Group II comprised fifteen asymptomatic subjects (6 males and 10 females) with only radiological changes of osteoarthritis of the knee. Group III comprised sixteen asymptomatic subjects without any radiological changes of the knee. All subjects matched for age and sex. Patients with obesity, gross malalignment of the body, other proven causes of arthritis, post traumatic osteoarthritis, discrepancy of length of both lower limbs and with other causes of secondary osteoarthritis were excluded from the start.
