Abstract The present work was conducted to evaluate the effect of prednisolone, either given alone or in combination with indomethacin, on the gastric mucosa of fasted and refed rats. The study included 48 albino rats which were divided into two main groups; the fasted group and the refed group. Each group included 24 rats and then further subdivided into four equal groups. The first group received indomethacin 30 mg/kg body weight subcutaneously as a single dose. The second group received prednisolone 5 mg/kg body weight orally as a single dose. The third group received both dtugs by the same dose and rout of the two previous groups. The fourth group received saline (1 ml) orally and served as control group. The rats were sacrificed 6 hours later after injection of 1% Evans blue solution ino the tail vein half an hour before sacrification. Blood samples were taken at sacrification for preparing of blood film to determine neutrophil count. Then the stomach and duodenam were dissected and opened where the lesions were studied by both macroscopic and microscopic examination. Macroscopic lesions were assessed according to Esplugues & Will (1990) scoring scole, and microscopic lesions were assessed according to Khaddouj et al., (1990) classification. |
