Abstract More than 50 conditions, both malignant and benign, have been cited as markers of internal malignancy. A true association is readily accepted when a cutaneous metastasis coexists with a primary internal malignancy, but the relationship is not so easily proved when a benign dermatosis is linked to an underlying malignant neoplasm (Poole and Fenske, 1993). Poole and Fenske (1993) have chosen a classification scheme for the cutaneous signs of internal malignancy, based on the aetiology of the various skin lesions because this system seems best suited to a discussion emphasizing the cutaneous aspects of internal malignant disease. The four broad categories of this classification include malignant involvement of the skin (metastatic and direct extension), genodermatoses, paraneoplastic dermatoses and environmental carcinogens. The present work was undertaken in an effort to evaluate the prevalence of both cutaneous and mucosal disorders occurring in association with internal malignant diseases aiming for early diagnosis and therapy of various internal malignancies and improving their survival rates. The present work included one hundered and sixty three patients already documented as cases of internal malignant disease were taken consecutively from the various departements of Mansoura University hospitals. All the studied cases were subjected to history taking, careful dermatological examination, some dermatological investigations as direct microscopical examination for fungus, cultures, histopathological examination when indicated and photography for some interesting dermatoses and some classic dermatological findings. |
