Abstract

The present work was carried out to find the possible changes in plasma ANP in patients with chronic renal failure whether managed conservatively or by HD. The material of study comprised 22 patients with chronic renal failure different causes. History of diabetes, hypertension, liver and heart diseases were excluded. A carefuly selected matched control group was chosen ’For all studied cases plasma ANP and some kidney func- tion tests were carried out. The results showed that there were significant increases in plasma ANP in the two groups : of patients on conservative management and HD. Compared to the control. This increase may be a compansatory mechanism to impaired renal function or a result of reduced elemination and altered metabolism of the peptide by the diseased kidney. 1 These same causes my partly explain the significantly low level of plasma ~ANP in conservatively managed patients than that observed in pat- ients who had not recieved any sort of treatment. Serum and urinary sodium concentrations in the unmana- ged patients were not significantly changed from the control. This normal serum sodium concentration may be the result of hypervolaemia afid hAemodilution in those patients.
