Abstract This study was carried on pulmonary tuberculous patients at Kafr El-Sheikh Chest Hospital and their close contacts in the period between January 1986 and December 1987. The total number of persons presented to the outpatient clinic was 15780,out of them &72 persons were suspected to have pulmonary tuberculosis on MMR • This study included 188 pulmonary tuberculous cases (103 males and 85 females).contacts was 526. The number of examined close All index cases and contacts were subjected to through clinical examination and investigations namely sputum direct smear examinatiopn uS1ng Ziehl-Neelsen stain, tuberculin testing, and radiographic examination (M.M.R.). Results of this study are discussed and analysed. It proved that: Sputum direct smear examination detects the more infectious active cases of pulmonary tuberculosis relative to radiographic examination which detects more numbers which may be inactive and non infectious.
