Abstract

Background: Depression is a term with meaning ranging from the transient dips in mood that are characteristic of life itself, to a clinical syndrome of substantial severity, duration and associated signs and symptoms that is markedly different from normal. Depression was found to present differently at different ages with various symptoms e.g., Prepubertly predominant somatic complains, agitation & phobias; Adolescence may present in the form of substance abuse, antisocial behaviour, poor hygiene, increase sensitivity rejection & suicidal ideations; and Elderly: cognitive deficits eg: memory loss & poor concentration. <U+00AC>Aim of work: To study the different clinical forms and variants of depression occurring in females in their adolescent period, and focus on possible unique characteristics of depression in this particular group which can be distinguished from recognized depression in older females. Methods: The patients were classified into two groups: group I (25 patients) Age from 1519 years and group II (25 patients) Age from 2855 years. Both groups were subjected to the following sheet of Psychiatric Department, Mansoura University. Clinical assessment using the psychometric studies including: Hamilton depression scale; Life event questionnaire; and Global assessment of functioning scale (GAF). Results: Significantly increased positive family history among adolescents (60%). Suicidal ideation, guilt feelings and memory impairment were also significantly more present in the adolescent group (60%). Non significant increase in severity of depression in adolescents (56%) which is reflected as non significant lower self care, higher depressed mood score and more frequent auditory hallucinations. Conclusions: Depression in females may have two different distinct types according to age as evidenced by different symptoms profile in the adolescent group versus the adult group. The atypical depression was found to be more frequent in adolescents than in adults and also suicidal ideation was more presented in adolescent females.
