Abstract

In patients with chronic viral liver diseases, serum leptin levels tend to increase as liver function worsens. This may reflect a decline in the ability to downregulate energy expenditure as an adaptation to anorexia and/or to defective substrate utilization due to liver disease and may negatively influence body weight homeostasis in these patients (Testa et al., 2000). The aim of the present study is to evaluate serum leptin levels in patients with chronic liver diseases of different aetiology. To fulfill this aim, 80 cases with chronic viral hepatitis of different aetiologies were studied, in addition to 10 healthy subjects. The studied cases included the following groups: chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) positive group (41 patients) comprised 15 males and 26 females with their mean age (42.3) years. This group subclassified into 23 patients non cirrhotic (chronic hepatitis) 23 patients (10 males and 13 females), with mean age (37.39 ± 10.32 years) ± SO and 18 patients post HeV cirrhosis (5 males and 13 females), with mean age (47.22 ± 9.006 years) ± SO. chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) positive group (25 patients) comprised 9 males and 16 females with their mean age (39.42) years. This group subclassified into 10 patients non cirrhotic (chronic hepatitis) 10 patients (3 males and 7 females), with mean age (30.70 ± 10.22 years) ± SO and 15 patients post HBV cirrhosis (6 males and 9 females), with mean age (48.14 ± 11.42 years) ± SO.
