Abstract
Pattern recognition may be classified as the major important trend of the AI field, as it can be very useful in many practical applications. One of the most important applications of the pattern recognition is Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Simply the problem of character recognition is how to convert an image that is acquired to the computer through scanner or video camera into text. The rapidly advancing information society produces enormous of electronic and paper documents, and one of the major tasks for office information systems is to retrieve desired documents from huge document databases. An Optical Character Recognition (OCR) facilitates the conversion of paper documents to electronic documents, but there are always recognition errors when OCR is used. Because these errors cause problems when the documents are to be retrieved, character recognition needs to be more efficiently combined with document retrieval techniques.
